Obituary for Thomas G "Tom" Lutz MD

Thomas G. Lutz MD
March 9, 2023
Thomas (Tom) Lutz, MD, 78 of Syracuse, NY passed away peacefully at home with his wife and sister by his side on March 9, 2023. Throughout his long illness, he was blessed with a blissful spirit, a ready smile, and a sense of humor.
A native of Schenectady, NY, he grew up in a large fun-loving family where he learned values which were the fabric of his life such as faith, family, discipline, accountability, and hard work.
Tom graduated from Bishop Gibbons High School, Schenectady, NY, and Boston College before receiving his medical degree in 1970 from St. Louis University Medical School. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and his fellowship in Hematology and Oncology during his seven years of service in the United States Navy at the Naval Regional Medical Center, San Diego, CA.
After completing his military service, Tom had a long and successful medical career. Most of his 33 years in private practice were spent caring for patients with cancer and diseases of the blood. He brought his energetic personality, sharp mind, compassion, listening skills, and a quick wit to his practice of medicine. Because of this, Tom’s patients felt very comfortable with him and trusted that he would provide them with the medical care they needed to get through a difficult cancer diagnosis. His patients were important to him, and he cared for them as members of his family.
Tom’s years of practice saw him at the Evansville Internal Medicine Group, Evansville, IN, Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, NY, and the Olean Medical Group, Olean, NY. While in Evansville, he was Medical Director of the Community Hospital Oncology Program, Director of the Deaconess/Ohio Valley Hospice, and Chairman of the Ethics Committee. His research affiliations were Hoosier Oncology Group; Investigator, Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (1991 – 1993); and National Cancer Institute participating investigator. While in Olean, NY, he was on the advisory board for Hospice/Home Care and the Olean General Hospital Board of Directors. A good public speaker, he often spoke in the community on topics of Cancer and end-of-life issues.
Tom was a devoted family man and a loving husband. He married the love of his life, Sandy, in 1967 and raised two daughters. Even with his busy schedule, he always had time to spend with his daughters and particularly loved spending a week each summer with their high school marching band at band camp. His grandchildren were the “apple of his eye” and he enjoyed doing fun things with them. Every time they were around, they made him smile.
Tom’s faith motivated his life. Wherever he lived, he was active in his Catholic parish community. Over the years, he participated in many classes, groups, and committees such as Cursillo, Stephen’s Ministry, RCIA, and parish councils to help grow his faith.
He had a full life, helped many people, and he was busy. Now it’s time for him to rest in God’s arms.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, George and Virginia Lutz. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sandy (Stefanick), his daughters Amy Lutz (Andrew Ford) and Erin Greysen; his four granddaughters, Hazel Jackson, Willow Jackson, Lucy Ford, and Sonja Ford; a brother, William (Jane) Lutz, and his three sisters, Bette Anne (Richard, deceased) Papa, Eileen (William) Phelps, and Kathleen Lutz.
Calling hours will be Saturday, March 25th from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at All Saints Church, 1340 Lancaster Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210 follow by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Mass will be live streamed at www.allsaintssyracuse.org
