Obituary for Sister Monica Zmolek

SISTER MONICA (GRACE ANTHONY) ZMOLEK, OSF

Sister Monica Zmolek, OSF, went home to God on Thursday at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, NY. Sister was born in Clutier, Iowa to Anton and Hilda Benda Zmolek. She was 93 years of age and had been a Sister of St. Francis for 74 years. Sister received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Dayton Extension, Honolulu, Hawaii and an MATR Degree from Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. Her early ministry found her teaching in schools in Syracuse, NY and Hawaii. After receiving her Masters, for 14 years Sister ministered as Director of Faith Formation in Dewitt, NY, Belmont, MA and Chittenango, NY. Her religious community recognized her leadership abilities and caring ways as she was elected to serve as the Assistant General Minister of the Sisters of St. Francis for the next 10 years. Following these years of service to her community, Sister Monica became a Parish Minister at Immaculate Conception Parish in Fayetteville, NY. She lovingly worked in this ministry for over 30 years. Lastly, Sister was a prayer minister at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, NY. Sister will be remembered for her love of life, prayerfulness, gentle spirit, graciousness, deep appreciation of her Franciscan Vocation and her spirit of thankfulness for God’s gifts of love and mercy. She was pre-deceased by her parents and two brothers – Anthony and John Zmolek, two brother-in-laws George Stoeckinger and Jim Hanson. She is survived by the Sisters of St. Francis; seven sisters – Camille Stoeckinger, Carla Hanson, Roberta (Fred) Mack, Michaela (Jim) Thomas, Jean Zmolek, Conni Zmolek and Veronica Zmolek; her brother Ladd (Jane) Zmolek, sister-in-law Patricia Zmolek and several nieces and nephews. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Franciscan Villa for the Sisters of St. Francis. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery. A recording of the Mass will be available on Carter Funeral Home’s Facebook page after her services. A Mass for family and friends will be celebrated on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 12:00 pm at the Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Salt Springs Street, Fayetteville, NY 13066.
