Obituary for Sister Joan Clare Jenny

SISTER JOAN CLARE (MILDRED) JENNY, OSF

Sister Joan Clare Jenny embraced death on Sunday, at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, NY. Sister was born in Utica, NY to John and Clara Weber Jenny. She was 94 years of age and had been a Sister of St. Francis for 69 years.
Sister graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Utica, NY and received both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Her ministry of compassionate nursing began at St. James, Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. After this, her ministry found her tending God’s people at St. Joseph Hospital in Syracuse, NY, St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica, NY and Mercy Rehab Center in Auburn, NY. She also served as Nursing Instructor at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing for 10 years, as Nurse Coordinator at Mercy Rehab in Auburn, NY for 20 years, and part-time Clinical Instructor at Cayuga County Community College in Auburn, NY.
Sister will long be remembered for her many years of devoted service to her community and for the Christ-like example she set for others. Sister was a tireless worker on behalf of her patients. Her patience, caring, gentleness and compassion left a mark on her sisters, nursing students, patients, families and staff at all the places at which she ministered.
Sister was pre-deceased by her parents, four brothers: Jerome, Raymond (Betty Jane), John and Oscar (Marilyn). She is survived by the Sisters of St. Francis, a sister-in-law Betty Jenny, and several nieces and nephews.
A private Mass of Christian Burial for Sisters of St. Francis only, will be celebrated at the Franciscan Villa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 6 at St. Joseph St Patrick Church, 702 Columbia Street, Utica, NY 13502. Burial will follow in the Sisters’ plot in St. Joseph Cemetery, 1427 Champlin Ave., Utica, NY 13502.
