Obituary for Sister Jean Marie Teixeira

Sister Jean Marie Teixeira went home to God on Monday at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, NY. She was 95 years of age and had been a Sister of St. Francis for 75 years.
Mary Doreen Teixeira was born on the Big Island of Hawaii in the small village of Kealakekua, to Richard and Maybel Gouveia Teixeira. After Mary’s family moved to Oahu, she attended schools in Honolulu, HI. Mary entered the Sisters of St. Francis in Syracuse, NY in January of 1948 and was invested in the Franciscan habit receiving the name of Sister Jean Marie in August 1948 and professed final vows in 1953.

In pursuing her teaching ministry, Sister earned a BS in Education from the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY and a Master’s Degree from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. Sister served 55 years in the classroom teaching. She began her teaching ministry at Mt. Carmel School in Utica, N.Y. and then moved to St. Joseph School in Hoboken, N.J., St. Therese School in Syracuse, back to Utica at St. Anthony School and then to Our Lady Help of Christians School in Albany, N.Y. She was then missioned to Santa Ana and Long Beach, California where the last 33 years of her teaching ministry were spent. In 2004, Sister Jean Marie returned to Syracuse where she continued her life ministering to the sisters in different capacities, especially as Eucharistic Minister at Jolenta Convent Chapel and as a Candy Maker for NunBetter Candy Shop. Lastly, Sister Jean was a prayer minister at Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, NY.

Sister will be remembered for her years of dedicated service to community, her prayerfulness, her special devotion to St. Francis, her handy ways with a toolbox, her kind, gentle manner, her love of gardening and her sense of humor.
Sister Jean was predeceased by her parents, brother, Walter Teixeira; sisters Leslie Wilkens, and Audrey (Richard) Menezes. She is survived by the Sisters of St. Francis, several nieces and nephews: Robert, Douglas, Diane and Debara Menezes; Toni Buenz, and Steve Teixeira.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Franciscan Villa. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Following Sister’s service a recording will be placed on Carter Funeral Home Syracuse Facebook page for viewing.
