Sally (Woods) Johnston was born May 18,1942 and passed away on May 10, 2023. She was married to James R. Johnston for nearly 51 years and they made their life in Syracuse. Sally was a lifelong activist and Founder of Disabled in Action of Greater Syracuse, Inc. She worked for Easter Seals for five years. Sally also worked for Cerebral Palsy Center, Enable and Access CNY for over 35 years. She served on many city and County Community Boards including ECOH and was recognized for her significant contributions to the Diocesan Commission on Disabilities. Sally designed and founded Consumer Directed Person Services in Onondaga County. She was the founder of the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Association of New York State. Sally was a leader in the ongoing struggle for Civil Rights for people with disabilities including accessible transportation, ADA implementation, long term care and rights for people served by the Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities. She was predeceased by her husband, James; her parents, Maurice and Katherine Woods; her sister, Karen Willis; and her brother, Greg Woods. Sally is survived by her son, James ”Jay”; her granddaughter, Jayni Isabella; her grandsons, Spencer James and Andrew Ward Johnston; her brothers, Richard (Kathy) Woods and Gordon Woods; her sister, Barbara (Gregory) Card; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Wednesday 4 to 7 pm at Carter Funeral Home, 1604 Grant Blvd, Syracuse, NY 13208. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Lucy’s Church, 432 Gifford Street, Syracuse on Thursday at 10:00 am. Private entombment will be in Pine Plains Cemetery, Clay, New York.
