Dr. Laura M. Martin, DO
March 25, 2021
Dr. Laura M. Martin, DO, 57, of East Syracuse, NY passed away suddenly and peacefully in her sleep on Thursday. A family practice physician, she loved helping others and was a fierce advocate for all her patients. She worked tirelessly to end the stigma surrounding addiction and those fighting it. Her greatest joy in life was being surrounded by her children and family, sharing laughter, love and lots of food.

She is joining her beloved husband, Jack Martin (2001) and mother, Shirley McKenzie (2014). She is survived by her four children, Kaitlyn, Rebecca, Samuel and Anna; her father, Daryl McKenzie; her sisters, Linda Sherman and Jill Salvatore and brother, Jeff McKenzie.

Calling hours for the public will be held Friday April 9, 2021 at Gethsemane United Methodist Church (1700 Butternut Street) from 3pm-7pm. She will be laid to rest privately by her family in an intimate ceremony.

This news is heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers go to the Family of Dr. Martin. I wanted to share my story because I know she touched so many of her patients the same way. I was being treated for addiction with Dr. Martin for roughly 7 years. I now have 3 beautiful boys and I am happily married. She saved my life. She was truly an amazing Doctor and will be missed by many.

I met Dr. Martin back in 2005. She changed my life. She helped me heal after a difficult childhood. I send my deepest condolences to her family and to anyone who's life she has touched. She was an angel on earth.

There is so much that I can say about Laura that I don't know where to start. We're ? 2nd & 3rd Drs. in Onondaga County to get certified to Rx. Suboxone. Then, ~ 2005, there wasn't much information re: what to do with anesthesia & pregnant and breast feeding patients among others, so we used to share our experiences to learn from ea. other. Our relation became more than one of a colleague to one of a friend. We refered patients to ea. other. Me being an Onondaga Delegate for the NY State Academy of Family Physicians, yrs. a ago she asked me to fight all the way to D.C. to increase the # of Suboxone patients that we could Rx. Suboxone, which yrs. after I with others achieved. We're a team. I tried to contact her re: an imporatnt aspect of The Academy and couldn't believe that she didn't respond me. Then, I was shocked with the news of her passing. Even after going to her wake, I can't believe that she's gone. I'm miss her a lot. She was full of life. She shared nice stories of her life with me which I appreciate. I always thought that we're going to retire together. I guess now I have to see her as my Angel in my medical field. There is more to say but I believe I had said enough. Sorry for your loss, family, friends, patients, drug reps, ...

To all of Laura's children and to Mr. McKenzie, Linda, Jeff and Jill: I am truly sorry I couldn't offer my condolences in person. It's difficult to understand how a person I considered a human dynamo could have left us so soon. I've known Laura since high school and she was never one to be sitting still, always busy and into something and successful in so many endeavors. Discussing Laura's latest adventures, I can still hear her mom say "well that's Laura!" and laugh!
My heart goes out to you.
