Obituary for John Prothero

John D. Prothero
July 8, 1962 - March 4, 2021
John David “Big John” Prothero, 58, of Syracuse, passed to the other side on Thursday due to pneumonia. He was predeceased by his mother, Lena Hart and by his stepfather, Harley Hart. John was born in California and moved to the Syracuse area at the age of five. He attended the ARC School, DeVillo Sloan School and several schools in the Syracuse City School District. He spent his childhood on Slocum Ave. in the city and on Warden Ave. in Nedrow. As an adult, John lived on Syracuse’s northside for many years where he had numerous acquaintances and friends. John was adept at fixing things and was often seen tinkering on something. For a while, he worked as an appliance repairman at the Hotel Syracuse. John enjoyed listening to music at home (rock ‘n roll oldies, classic country and in particular Johnny Cash). John liked to attend the New York State Fair each year. He often attended games at NBT Bank Stadium and the Carrier Dome.
John is survived by his long-time friends, Eileen and Marty Clark, and by his beloved cat, Popeye. Many thanks are extended to all the people who helped and befriended John along the way, especially those at Onondaga Community Living and Central Park Rehab.
A calling hour will be held Saturday, Mar. 13th, from 11 am to 12 pm at Carter Funeral Home, 1604 Grant Blvd., Syracuse, with a service following at 12 pm.
