Obituary for Joan Marie Rayo

Joan Marie Rayo (Hayes)
March 22, 2021
Joan Marie Rayo, 89, of Syracuse, died Monday at St. Camillus Nursing Home.
Joan led a long, happy and healthy life and retained her wonderful sense of
humor until the very end. Joan was a resident of the Syracuse area since 1940.
She was a homemaker and the beloved mother of six children and five grandchildren.
Her Father, John E. Hayes, died in 1972; Her Mother, Helen Hayes and her Sister,
Barbara Rich died in 2004. Joan’s Husband, John A. Rayo Sr. died in 2009 and their
first daughter, Linda, died in 1957 of Leukemia. Joan was a devout Wife and the most
loving and caring Mother that any child could ever wish for. She selflessly encouraged
and supported each of her children while providing a nurturing home for them to grow.
Once Joan’s children were grown, she chose to satisfy her longtime desire to enter the workforce and to play tennis. Joan played competitive tennis into her 80’s and never
forgot how much she enjoyed it. Joan often spoke of her happy upbringing with her
loving Parents and caring Siblings. But most of all, Joan loved to dance and
never missed an opportunity to express that great joy throughout her lifetime.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Susan Rayo of East Syracuse, Joan (Geoff) Adams
of Liverpool and Cathleen Scott of East Syracuse; by her sons, John (Marianne) Rayo Jr. of Rochester, NY and Robert (Susan) Rayo of Baldwinsville; by her grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, Nicholas, Michael and Erin; by her sister, Helen (Arthur) Longden of Fayetteville, NY; by her brothers, John (Betty) Hayes of Sacramento, CA, Stephen Hayes of Spencerport, NY, David (Joan) Hayes of Washington, DC, and Paul (Sharon) Hayes of Atlanta, GA, and by a number of nieces and nephews. A private Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Blessed Sacrament Church, and entombment was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Contributions, in Joan’s memory, can be made to a local charity of one’s choice.
