Obituary for Joan D. Behrens

Joan D. Behrens (Demarest)
October 15, 1931 - November 4, 2020
Joan D. Behrens, 89, of Skaneateles, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, with her family by her side. Joan was born in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Otis and Lillian Demarest.
Being a woman in the field of physics and science, she was considered an early pioneer in the field. Joan was a professor at Queens College, where she was fortunate to meet her husband, of over 62 years, John, and she went on to retire from Suffolk Community College. Joan cherished her family, and loved being a grandmother. Her interests included gardening, swimming, skiing and playing golf. She was a proud member of the Skaneateles Branch of the American Association of University Women. She is survived by her husband, John; by her daughters, Suzanne (Martin) Losito and Jill (Jeffrey) Underhill; and by her grandchildren, Alaina and Nicole Losito and Jason and Timothy Underhill. Her brother, Bill Demarest had predeceased her.
An intimate family gathering, to celebrate Joan’s life, will be held in warmer weather along the shores of Skaneateles lake.
Contributions in her memory can be made to The Association for Women In Science, via their web-site at www.awis.org
