Obituary

Janet M. (Kammar) Awad
June 21, 1939 - September 6, 2019
Janet M. Awad, 80, of Westvale passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Friday. Janet was born on June 21, 1939 in Syracuse, NY to the late Abraham and Emily Kammar. She was a graduate of Eastwood High School and later attended Beauty School in New York City. On June 21, 1959, she married the love of her life Edward Awad, who passed away on September 9, 2014. Together they raised five loving, supportive children, Edward (Shirley), Anne Marie (Paul) LaRose, Christine Wachna, Michaele (Jim) Ferretti and Elizabeth (Jim) Gunnip. Together they were blessed with 10 grandchildren, Paul, Josh, Amanda, Alexis, Michael, Lindsay, Dominique, Jordan, Julia and Gabrielle. They were the recipients of her unconditional love and many life lessons. She is also survived by her sisters, Hilda (James) Khammar and Jewell Gabriel and by her brother, Charles (Mary) Kammar and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Janet was predeceased by her brother-in-law Charles Gabriel. Janet was a loving wife, mother, gramma and sister. Janet was a strong believer in her faith, which allowed her to win her 20 year battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Janet enjoyed family trips, visiting the casinos, cooking Middle Eastern dishes, shopping, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, playing the piano and was known to always be dressed to the nines. She was a lifelong member of Saint Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church where she participated in several church festivals. Janet retired from hairdressing after many years, working at Design One, The Addis Company, JC Penney’s and later maintained a hair salon in her home, where she built many friendships from her clientele. Calling hours will be Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 4 to 7 pm at St. Elias Orthodox Antiochian Orthodox Church, 4988 Onondaga Rd., Syracuse. Funeral Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 am at the church followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to Saint Elias Endowment Fund, 4988 Onondaga Rd., Syracuse, NY 13215 or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 4043 Maple Rd., Suite 105, Amherst, NY 14226.

We are sincerely sorry to hear of the passing of Janet last week. We came to know Janet through her husband Ed, who had worked at Kemper as did Colleen. Janet and Ed were a remarkable couple who adored their family, church and were faith driven. Our prayers are with the entire Awad Family at this time. May Janet rest in peace as she is reunited with Ed. God bless all of you.

The Rice family remembers “Aunt Janet” as being a beautiful lady who was a joy to know. Our parents were friendly with the Awads. Joan Rice, our mom, always spoke fondly of your mother and enjoyed sharing the same birthday. As I look at the photos here online, I cannot help but feel profoundly sad for the kids she left behind. The pain is so hard as our mom passed in 2011. Thinking of you all at this difficult time. I love thinking of her enjoying time with her beloved husband Ed and all the Awads that have passed on. Just know we hold you all close at this time. Love, Sue Rice Howes and sisters

Thank You Rice Sisters - I have many fond memories of our get-togethers on Ludden Parkway. These are memories that all the Awad’s & Rice’s will cherish forever. I too remember they shared 6/21 - for sure they will both be celebrating together with all of their loved ones. Liz Awad Gunnip
