Flora P. Johnson, 97, of Syracuse, passed away at her home on Friday.
Flora was born in Solvay on August 3, 1923 to Romano and Maude Pernisi.
She enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to Parris Island, S.C. where she met and married her husband of 69 years, Ira B. Johnson.
After being discharged from the Navy, they moved back to Syracuse to start their family. She joins the ranks of “The Greatest Generation” who have preceded her in death. Flora enjoyed stained glass art, square dancing with her husband, loved to travel, and was an avid seamstress. She volunteered at St. Joseph's Hospital for 25 years and was involved with her sorority, Beta Sigma Phi. For many years, she was a very active member of St. John The Baptist / Holy Trinity Church, where she volunteered with the Food Pantry. Flora enjoyed her participation in Salt City Women's Veterans Organization, and attending performances of Symphoria, with her daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Johnson.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ira B. Johnson; by her daughter, Marie Summerwood; by her infant son, Robert Allen, along with her three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include her sons, Charles R. (Mary Lou), Richard P. PHD (Maria), James I. (Robin), and Joseph M. (Tracy) Johnson; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, and her great-great grandchild. Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 16th , from 4 to 7 pm at Carter Funeral Home, 1604 Grant Blvd., Syracuse. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11:30 am in St Marianne Cope at St Cecilia Church, 1001 Woods Rd.,
Solvay, NY. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in the Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery.
