Obituary for Filomena Vassallo Ferrara

Filomena Vassallo Ferrara
September 28, 1919 - February 3, 2022
Filomena Vassallo Ferrara, 102, of Syracuse, passed away on Thursday at Loretto. Filomena was an inspiration to everyone she met; an energetic centenarian whose recipe for a long productive life was “just keep moving and keep learning”. She was predeceased by her husband, of 65 years, Dr. Louis B. Ferrara, DDS, and by her son, Louis P. Ferrara. She was a devoted mother, whose long life will be cherished by her surviving family, including her children, Ralph Ferrara and Joanne (David) Stewart of Syracuse, NY, Michael (Sharron) Ferrara of New York Mills, NY, Rosemary (Steve) Wharton of Bowie, MD, and Laurie (Allen) Stewart of San Antonio, TX; her 10 grandchildren and her three great-grandchildren. Filomena was also very proud of her accomplishments as a Registered Nurse. She graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, NY in 1946, with a Bachelor of Nursing Degree. Filomena worked as a Civilian Registered Nurse during World War II at Rhoades General Hospital, New York Mills, NY, and for several hospitals and insurance companies throughout the Syracuse area, prior to retirement. She also served as an instructor in the Licensed Practical Nurse Program at Central Technical Institute, Syracuse City School District; and volunteered for religious education programs at St. Daniel’s Church and as a visiting nurse at the Eastwood Senior Center for the Onondaga County Health Department.
Her family will receive friends on Monday, Feb. 7th, from 11:30 am to 12 pm at St. Daniel Church, 3004 Court St., Syracuse, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 pm, and entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Filomena’s family wishes to thank Kristin Glavin, RN, and the entire staff of 10 Cunningham at Loretto, for the care they provided her since November 2020. Also, they ask that you consider a donation to St. Daniel Church, in her memory.
