Obituary for Elisabeth Vandeven

Elisabeth Vandeven
May 8, 1931 - February 10, 2020
Elisabeth Vandeven, 88, of Liverpool, died on February 10, 2020. She was born in Braunsberg, East Prussia (then, Germany). After her father was killed in the WWII Battle of Stalingrad, Elisabeth along with her mother and siblings escaped the Russian invasion and became refugees, eventually settling in Münster, West Germany.

Elisabeth completed her nursing education as a medical social worker in West Germany. She met her future husband Donald in Heidelberg and migrated to Syracuse in 1957, where they married in 1958.

Elisabeth completed her Masters in Education at Syracuse University. She worked as an elementary corrective reading specialist for the Syracuse City School District for over 25 years. During retirement, Elisabeth volunteered at Upstate Cancer Center and was an ombudsman for area nursing homes.

Elisabeth loved to cook and bake. She traveled with a pouch overflowing with her favorite recipes. She enjoyed “Oma and grandchildren” activities which always involved aprons and baking.

Elisabeth’s husband, Donald, died in 2018. They had been married for 60 years. She is survived by their children: Andrea (David Cohen); Mark (Myriamne Coffeen, deceased); and Christine; their five grandchildren: Rebecca and Emily Cohen; Mikayla, Theo, and Anya Coffeen-Vandeven; beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews in the United States, Canada, and Germany; and many dear friends and valued colleagues.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Feb. 16th, from 5 to 6 pm, followed by a brief service at 6 pm at Carter Funeral Home, 1604 Grant Blvd., Syracuse. A celebration of life and burial at the Onondaga County Veteran’s Cemetery will take place in the spring. Contributions may be made to the Liverpool Public Library (lpl.org) or the Upstate Foundation.
