Duane Franklin Schumacher, age 68, was born on March 28, 1953 in Lansing, Michigan and passed peacefully at home in Liverpool, NY after a long illness on July 27, 2021. He proudly served in the United States Army. After his service Duane pursued a degree in business, worked as a professional for many years, and then served a career with the Syracuse Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and retired after twenty years.
Duane was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing, boating, good coffee, his dog, and watching Michigan State University sports.
He was predeceased by his mother, Geraldine (Brown); by his father, Franklin; by his stepmother, Alice, as well as by his sister, Elizabeth and brother, Donald. Duane is survived by his devoted wife, Wendy Schumacher of Liverpool, NY; by his son, Paul Schumacher (Jennifer) of North Syracuse, NY; by his daughter, Ann Canastra (Daniel) of Cicero, NY; and by his sons, Jon Schumacher (Jessica) of Providence, NC, James Schumacher of Liverpool, NY, and Joseph Schumacher of Liverpool, NY. He was known as “Gramps” and “Papa” to his grandchildren: Carter, Quentin, Madeline, Abigail, Cody, Adrienne, and Aria. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Richard Carta, Sr. of Liverpool, NY, several siblings, in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loved ones and friends, who enjoyed his quick wit and special sense of humor.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Aug. 3rd, from 10 am to noon at Carter Funeral Home, 1604 Grant Blvd., Syracuse, NY, followed by funeral services at noon and then burial, with Military Honors, in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
