Obituary for Dr. Edward Francis Storm

Dr. Edward Francis Storm
November 18, 2021
Dr. Edward Francis Storm, 92, (November 6, 1929 -- November 18, 2021) of Pleasant Street, Manlius, died Thursday, November 18th in Crouse Hospital after a long illness.
Dr. Storm was a beloved and highly respected Professor of Computer Science at Syracuse University from the early 1970's, and subsequently Emeritus Professor.

He attended the Catholic boy's high school, the Salesianum School, and graduated in 1947 where he stood third in his class of 88 students, and won prizes for excellence including first prizes for Excellence in Latin and in German.

From the time of his graduation from the Salesianum School in 1947 through the 1950's Ed attended the St. Charles Seminary in Catonsville Maryland where he intended to become a priest but left to study with the organists Paul Terry and the Philadelphia concert organist Robert Elmore.

He held several positions as Organist of various churches until becoming Organist and Choir Director at the Cathedral of Saint John in Salem, NJ in 1955, while simultaneously employed in the Electronic Computer Division of the DuPont Company. After enrolling in 1957 at the University of Delaware, Mr Storm completed an AB degree in Arts and Sciences in 1959 and became a graduate student and Teaching Fellow in Applied Mathematics at Harvard University in 1960.

At Harvard, he was a doctoral student of Prof. Hao Wang, among the most distinguished logicians of the 20th century. Interested in philosophy of mind, he worked with Professor Timothy Leary in Leary's early work, and later as a Professor in the School of Computer and Information Science at Syracuse University he worked with Prof Robert Morris, the Arthur Koestler Professor of Parapsychology at the University of Edinburgh and with Cambridge University Professor and Physics Nobel laureate Brian Josephson on parapsychological experiments.

Prof. Storm had maintained devoted friendships with his former Ph.D. student, Emeritus Prof. Robert Seidman of Southern New Hampshire University, Emeritus Prof. Emory Fanning, former Choir Director and Organist at Middlebury College, and Emeritus Associate Professor Howard Blair of Syracuse University and their families. Prof. Storm was devoted as well to his wolfhounds and borzoi. He loved many kinds of music and had a record collection of more than 700 LPs. He was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing classical pieces on his Steinway concert grand.

Prof Storm was admired and respected by undergraduate and graduate students alike for his excellence as a teacher, support as a mentor, his keen intelligence and sharp wit, and his dedication to progressive social causes over the years. While at Syracuse University, he was known for trying unorthodox teaching approaches such as using a student rock band to musically illustrate one of his lectures on the mathematics of recursion. He will be missed by many.

Services will be at 1:00 pm, Tuesday November 30th at All Saints Church, 1340 Lancaster Ave, Syracuse. Contributions may be made to the CNY SPCA.
