Obituary for Derrick Wayne Tucker

Derrick Wayne Tucker, father, educator, musician, and philomath, passed away September 4th 2021. Known for his unique sense of humor, immense vocabulary and beautifully distinctive voice. He was born May 17, 1955 and was raised in Syracuse, NY. He graduated from JD High School, and attended Williams College, University of Buffalo, Syracuse University and SUNY Oswego, receiving bachelor’s, master’s degrees and other certifications. Derrick served students in the Education Field for over 30 years. He loved leading students in Black History Month presentations and impromptu sporting events. He was passionate about reading, playing disc golf, playing the piano and singing. A musician with a true gift, he played funk, gospel, and rock. Recognizing his love of the outdoors, calling hours will be held Saturday, Sept. 11th, from 2 to 4 pm in the yard at 108 Diana Ave. Syracuse, NY, and services will follow at 4pm, Reverend Craig Townsend presiding. Derrick is survived by his sons, Miles and Wayne Tucker; step-brothers, Jacob Sherrill Jr. and Gordon Sherrill; as well as 8 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Everest Tucker Sr. and Louise Tucker; step-father, Jacob Sherrill Sr.; brother, Everest Tucker Jr., and sisters, Brenda Tucker-Johnson and Susan Tucker-Ehrmann.
