Obituary for Derek Russell Umstead
Derek Russell Umstead Sr., 66, of Lake Park, MN, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2022, at Viking Manor, Ulen, MN.
Derek was born on February 6, 1956, to Donald and Doris (Knight) Umstead in Syracuse, New York. He grew up in Syracuse, where he attended and graduated from Corcoran High School. He began his career as a machinist for Diebold where he worked for nearly 13 years. He worked at various jobs until moving to Michigan in 2000 where he met Lorrie Jackson. They were united in marriage on April 10, 2002, in Waterford, MI. While in Michigan, he worked as a machinist for Brose, and he moved to many states for his work with Brose until he eventually settled in Minnesota in 2016.
Derek loved football, especially the Miami Dolphins. He enjoyed crafting dreamcatchers with NFL logos weaved into his creations. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and partying with his friends.
Derek is survived by his loving wife, Lorrie; children, Angela (Shannon Wheeler) Umstead, Elizabeth (Richard) Hamilton, and Anthony (Faduma) Umstead; stepdaughter, Stephanie Flores; grandchildren, Shane, Logan, and Eliza; siblings, Dana (Anita) Umstead, Darlene (Edward) Scott, Deborah (Douglas) Medler, DarLynn Umstead, and Daryl (Kelly) Moncrief; and many other loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his son, Derek Umstead, Jr.; parents, Donald and Doris; and siblings, Donald and Dawn Umstead. Friends may call from 2pm to 3:30pm on Sunday February 5, 2023 at the Carter Funeral Home, Inc. 1604 Grant Blvd. Syracuse, NY 13208 with a service to follow.
