The Rev. Carol A. Moyer, 84, of Syracuse passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 8th 2021, from natural causes. Carol touched many lives over her ministerial career spanning over 50 years in Central NY churches, serving as pastor and performing numerous volunteer roles. She was also a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Carol was a first generation American born to German immigrants, Erich Ralph and Gertrude Andrae in Ferguson, Missouri on June 25th, 1936. She was a popular student at Ferguson High School participating in social committees, chorus, musical theater, dance and athletics. Her love of music and sports continued throughout her life, often attending the theater and passionately following SU Basketball.
Carol began her ministerial career in the 1970’s as a church secretary and became active in the field of Christian Education running educational programs at church retreats for intergenerational students at Watson Homestead and Casowasco. In the early 1980’s Carol heard the call to enter the ministry and attended Empire State College while serving her first church in Lock Berlin, NY. She completed her education by attending Wesley Seminary School and Emory University in Atlanta where she achieved a Masters in Divinity. In 1988 she was ordained a Deacon in the United Methodist Church.
Carol gave and received great joy, satisfaction and Christian love with her congregations, serving the United Church of Christ and United Methodist churches in Central New York including Varick, Warners, Camillus, Chittenango and Port Byron. She was known for using all of her gifts in her ministry including her powerful soprano singing voice, her love of laughter and generous capacity to give hugs to all. She retired in 2006.
Carol was predeceased by her parents; by her brother, William; by her sister, Virginia Kline and by her husband, Rev. Mardean Moyer. She leaves behind four children, Ralph (Vikki) Wise, Eric (Kelly) McDermitt-Wise, Beth Wise and Martin Moyer; seven grandchildren, Emma, Jonathan, Timothy, Joseph, Anna, Samuel and Dean; a great grandchild, Autumn, and two step-sons, Michael and Bruce Moyer. Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 20th, from 1 to 3 pm at the Chittenango United Methodist Church, 205 Falls Blvd., Chittenango, NY. Masks, social distancing and hand sanitizing measures will be observed. Services will follow at 3 pm, and burial will be private in New Berlin, PA.
