Barbara Jean Hayes,93, of Syracuse passed away on Thursday. She retired as a Laboratory Technician at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. Even a long life seems somehow too short, especially to loved ones and admirers left behind. That is perhaps the best definition of a life well spent. No one can dare say that Barbara wasn’t “one of a kind” whose likeness will be missed by both family and friends. Her smile was infectious and her loyalty to all things Syracuse was sincere. She enjoyed tennis, golf (Hole in One at 84 year-old),skiing, boating and playing bridge. She held SU football and basketball season tickets for seventy-five years. A world traveler – when asked her favorite place, she simply replied, “The Adirondacks”. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Dennis and Elizabeth Hayes; her siblings, Bette (Joseph) Highland; Bill (Marian) Hayes and Marianne (Francis) Larkin; her nephew, Jim Highland and niece, Maureen Tessier. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Denise (Igor) Shukoff, Sharon (John) Spiridigliozzi, Barbara Jo (Jim) Babiarz, Dennis Hayes, M. Patricia (Rick) Walsh, Paul (Christine) Hayes, Daniel (Kim) Larkin, Terry (Karen) Larkin, JD Tessier, Ellen Larkin, Beth (Tim) Frank, BJ (Sherry) Hayes and Brian (Brenda) Hayes; many great and great-great nieces and nephews as well as cherished friends. Calling hours will be Thursday 9:30 to 10:30 am at Blessed Sacrament Church 3127 James Street Syracuse, N.Y. 13206 followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30. A recording of the Mass will be available on Carter Funeral Home’s Facebook page after her services.
