Amy Kipping Cayen, passed peacefully on Friday after a valiant fight against cancer in the loving embrace of her daughter, Emily. She was born February 17, 1965, to Mary and Richard Barnhill, and grew up in Cazenovia. She graduated from Manlius Pebble Hill and Syracuse University with a B.A. in English and an M.S. in Special Education. Amy taught in the Syracuse School District for 28 years at Webster Elementary and Nottingham High School. Amy was a devoted and loving mother to her daughter, Emily, a fierce and loyal friend, a dedicated teacher and colleague, a talented writer, a “famous published poet” and an incredible source of experience, strength and hope to so many. Amy loved concerts, movies, travel, skiing, trivia, reading, the ocean, and helping others. She leaves behind a legacy of laughter, loving kindness, a remarkable wit and her beautiful smile that lit up every room she walked into. Amy is survived by her beloved daughter, Emily; her sister, Carter (John) Schwonke and brother, Richard “Barney” Barnhill. She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Mary. Calling hours will be held at Carter Funeral Home, Inc. 1604 Grant Boulevard Syracuse, NY 13208 on Thursday from 4-7 pm directly followed by a memorial service where friends are invited to share their memories of Amy.
